Tony Stark (Iron Man)

Tony Stark is a super genius playboy philanthropist. He was captured by the Ten Rings organization and held prisoner which prompted him to create the very first Iron Man suit. Since then, Tony has helped defeat villains such as Obadiah Stane, Whiplash, Aldrich Killian, and Loki. Tony is in a relationship with Pepper Potts and counts James Rhodes as one of his best friends and allies. He is a part of the Avengers along with Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye. He also considers Nick Fury, Maria Hill, and Happy Hogan as close friends and allies. He is currently without any Iron Man suits and is trying to make the world as peaceful as possible. 

Steve Rogers (Captain America)

Steve Rogers was the first ever super soldier created in the 1940s. After helping defeat the Red Skull, Rogers crashed a plane into the water and was found many years later. Back in the 1940s, Rogers drew close to Peggy Carter, but the age difference caused by the crash is too much for them now. Rogers has trained in many different areas of combat. Combining his fighting skills with his vibranium shield, Rogers is a handful for anyone who goes up against him. Besides the Red Skull, he has helped take down villains such as Alexander Pierce, Loki, the Winter Soldier, and HYDRA. He is a part of the Avengers along with Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye. He also considers The Falcon, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, and Sharon Carter close friends and allies. He is now trying to find his old friend Bucky Barnes (the Winter Soldier) and take down what remains of HYDRA.

Thor Odinson

Thor is the God of Thunder reigning from the foreign planet of Asgard. With his trusty hammer, Mjolnir, in his hand, he is one of the most powerful beings in the entire universe. He has declined the option to be the ruler of Asgard and will let his father, Odin, continue to rule. He protects the 9 realms, but always has an eye on Earth to protect his love interest Jane Foster. Thor has helped defeat villains such as his brother Loki twice and Malekith. He is also a member of the Avengers along with Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye. He also has many other allies like Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Erik Selvig, Darcy Lewis, Lady Sif, Heimdall, Volstagg, Hogun, and Fandral. He is currently dealing with the death of his mother, Frigga, and the apparent death of his brother Loki while staying focused and protecting the 9 realms.

Bruce Banner (Hulk)

Bruce Banner was just a regular guy experimenting with gamma radiation until everything went wrong. Or right depending on how you look at it. Now he has the ability when angry to become a giant, green, indestructible monster named the Hulk. Ruffalo is the second actor to portray Bruce Banner in Marvel's Cinematic Universe, and looks like he will stick around for a while. The Hulk has helped defeat the likes of the Abomination and Loki. He is part of the Avengers along with Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, and Hawkeye. He also counts Nick Fury and Maria Hill as allies. He had a girlfriend in The Incredible Hulk, Betty Ross, but she has yet to be brought back or mentioned in the following movies. Nowadays, Bruce spends his time counseling Tony Stark and trying to gain even more control over the Hulk.

Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow)

Natasha Romanoff is a trained assassin who spent many years working for the "bad guys." With everything she was doing, she quickly was on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s radar. They sent Hawkeye to kill her, but he made a different call and recruited her to work for S.H.I.E.L.D. She has helped take down villains such as Whiplash, Loki, Alexander Pierce, and HYDRA as a whole. She is part of the Avengers along with Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and Hawkeye. She also counts Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Falcon, Pepper Potts, Iron Patriot, and Happy Hogan as allies and close friends. With the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D., all of Natasha's identities have been compromised and she is now off in hiding.

Clint Barton (Hawkeye)

Clint Barton is a trained fighter in basically every area. His weapon of choice is his bow equipped with his special arrows. He had worked for S.H.I.E.L.D. for quite a while, and with it falling, what he is doing now is a mystery. He is part of the Avengers along with Iron man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and Black Widow. Alongside of the other Avengers, Barton helped take down Loki in New York. He considers Nick Fury, Maria Hill, and Erik Selvig as allies.

Nick Fury

Nick Fury is the baddest man on the planet when he chooses to be. He is an ex-military man turned head of S.H.I.E.L.D. He has helped take down villains such as Loki, Alexander Pierce, and the Clairvoyant. He helped form the Avengers team and knows they will always be around to help protect the Earth. His other allies include Maria Hill, Phil Coulson, the Falcon, Erik Selvig, Jane Foster, Melinda May, Skye, Jemma Simmons, Antoine Triplett, and Leo Fitz. With S.H.I.E.L.D. now gone, Fury has set out to destroy the rest of HYDRA and keep up the perception of him being dead. 

Maria Hill

Maria Hill was Nick Fury's second in command for quite a while. While she seems reluctant at times to Fury's ways, she understands that Fury knows what is best. Hill has many allies as a result of working for S.H.I.E.L.D. Her allies include Nick Fury, Phil Coulson, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Pepper Potts, Erik Selvig, Skye, Melinda May, Jemma Simmons, Antoine Triplett, and Leo Fitz. She currently works for Stark Industries as an assistant to Pepper Potts and Tony Stark.

Loki

Loki is the adopted brother of Thor after Odin rescued him as a baby. Loki is both Asgardian and a Frost Giant. After living in the shadow of Thor, Loki was filled with rage and wanted nothing more than to see his brother fall. Loki is gifted with magic abilities and uses them to his benefit. He used them in the battle of New York many times, even using them to kill Coulson. He also faked his own death in Thor: The Dark World and is now using his magic to pose as Odin and rule Asgard.

Thanos

Thanos is that big purple guy who appeared at the end of The Avengers. He is from Titan and after the Infinity Gauntlet. Using the Infinity Gauntlet, which uses the six Infinity Stones that control space, power, mind, soul, reality, and time, Thanos can become more powerful than anything the Avengers have faced so far. He has used Loki and Ronan so far to do his dirty work and try and get him some of the Infinity Stones. He still does not have any in his possession to public knowledge.

Pepper Potts

Pepper Potts was just Tony Stark's secretary and girl friend until Tony decided to make a change. She is now the CEO of Stark Industries. She has gotten into plenty of trouble over the years. She was almost killed by Obadiah Stane and got injected with Extremis during Iron Man 3. Tony figured out how to remove the Extremis from her body and she is now helping him build Avengers Tower. She has gathered many allies throughout the years including Tony Stark, James Rhodes, Nick Fury, Black Widow, Happy Hogan, and Maria Hill. 

Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch)

Wanda Maximoff has been experimented on by Baron Von Strucker and HYDRA. Using Loki's staff, Strucker has been able to give Wanda super powers. Her powers include being able to change reality, telekinesis, and more. She is still learning how to use and control these powers as was shown in the post credit scene. She will have a more prominent role alongside her brother Quicksilver when they take on and eventually join the Avengers team in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Pietro Maximoff (Quicksilver)

Pietro Maximoff has been experimented on by Baron Von Strucker and HYDRA. Using Loki's staff, Strucker has been able to give Pietro super powers. His power is super speed. He is still learning how to control his power as was shown in the post credit scene. He will have a more prominent role alongside his sister Scarlet Witch when they take on and eventually join the Avengers team in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Baron Von Strucker

Baron Von Strucker is one of the remaining leaders of HDYRA. He has gotten his hands on Loki's staff and is using it to try and generate super powers for people. He had been unsuccessful for some time until he got his first hit with "the twins." He will try to use them to fight the Avengers when Avengers: Age of Ultron hits the big screen in 2015.

Ultron

Ultron will be the main villain in Avengers: Age of Ultron as the subtitle states. Ultron is an evolving artificial intelligence (A.I.). His origin is unknown at this time but likely a result of Tony Stark's work. Ultron will have his own robotic suit next summer and will take on the Avengers as he tries to take over the world.

Erik Selvig

Stellan Skarsgård was brought along by Jane Foster to discuss her research. He later joined S.H.I.E.L.D. to work on the Tesseract. He was put under a mind spell by Loki to help him bring Thanos's army to Earth. His allies include Jane Foster, Darcy Lewis, Nick Fury, Phil Coulson, Hawkeye, Thor, and Black Widow. 

Vision

Vision is a creation of Ultron, the main villain in Avengers: Age of Ultron. He has the ability to change his density and fly among other things. He diverts from his programming and turns against Ultron, ultimately helping the Avengers and joining them. He has had a romantic relationship with Scarlet Witch.

Phil Coulson

Phil Coulson has been through it all as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. So far in fact that he was killed by Loki and then revived using secret project T.A.H.I.T.I. that he helped form. His death was a driving force in getting the Avengers to team up. He has helped take down villains such as the Clairvoyant, Deathlok, Ian Quinn, Grant Ward, and Franklin Hall. He has a relationship with almost every person in Marvel's universe. He is currently the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and recruiting new agents to help rebuild the organization.
